East of Malaga
The area east of Malaga is fairly unknown to many people. Here is a short introduction to the area.
A week on the beach with lovely evening meals somewhere on the Costa del Sol is what the average tourist experiences. A lot of people go to Spain to relax and enjoy the time with the wonderful weather .
The less typical tourist is spending a lot of time touring the area. Some go to see the caves in Nerja,
others go the whole way to El Chorro to see the gorge, have a trip in a canoe and finish off with a Paella overlooking the lakes.
This less typical tourist is living east of Malaga... Or this was how it used to be!
These days the area east of Malaga has arrived on the map. There is now a motorway the whole way to Nerja and an extension to Almuñecar is in the process of being built.
The new motorway has made it easy, safe and quick to drive between the bigger cities in Andalucia , and the areas affected have made substantial progress.
In the last 5 years international lifestyles have blossomed, with facilities such as big shopping centres, restaurants and cinemas - films are even shown in their original languages.
La Axarquía
The region east of Malaga, until Granada is reached, is called "Axarquía". It is a very beautiful area with stunning scenery. This part is not blemished by big hotel developments and high-rise buildings as can be seen around Marbella.
East of Malaga you will find towns such as:
1. Rincon de la Victoria
2. Torre del Mar
3. Velez Malaga
4. Nerja
Rincon de la Victoria
Often just called "Rincon" it has now fully merged with La Cala del Moral. Rincon has often been seen as one of the most exclusive areas for the Spanish, and big parts of Rincon are bought by the Spanish as holiday homes and it is therefore almost empty in the winter .
Torre del Mar and Velez Malaga
They are considered twin-towns but are divided by the motorway, The two towns are very different though, as there is hardly a tourist to be found in Velez Malaga.
Torre del Mar
Torre del Mar is a coastal town, and by the sea is the best way of getting to know it. The resort allegedly has the longest promenade in Europe. Along its length you will find small cafes "chiringuitos" and restaurants where you can find an array of seafood dishes. At night you will find it very different there as the promenade is host to dance-clubs and bars frequented by the Spanish youngsters .
Velez Malaga
This is a working town with some interesting architecture and some old palaces. The origins can be traced back to the Phoenicians and the Carthaginians.
Nerja
Has a very charming old centre, beautiful beaches in and around Nerja which have made this town famous even before it was blessed with a motorway.
