
It is also one if the oldest cities in Spain, and is known as the white town.
Ronda is about 750 meters above sea level. It’s high location is one of the main reasons that it was the last moorish town that was taken over by the catholics. When ran by the moorish, the town became an important cultural centre for al-Andaluz and many palaces and mosques were build.
The Moors managed to defend the city up until 1485.
Ronda is mainly known for he fantastic views from the bridge “El Tajo” and the white houses. Ronda is also famous for it´s bullfighting arena which is one of the oldest in Spain, and also the largest.

In Ronda you will find many small museums dating back to the towns colourful and romantic past. The history of Ronda is associated with bandits and bullfights.
The bullring in where the matador Pedro Romero lived, fought and died.
The Bandits where roaming the mountains and robbing the wealthy tourists that arrived in Ronda. There is today a small facinating museum, about the bandits and their time. Information on how they would strip the tourist of all the jewels etc. This museum is worth a visit if you want to get a closer look into the history of Ronda
During the Spanish Civil war the famous writer Ernest Hemmingway worked as a newspaper correspondent and got some inspiration that he later used for some of his books. He wrote two books that featured Ronda. ‘For whom the bell tolls’ and ‘Death in the Afternoon’. Hemmingway became friends with a local bullfighter and the book “Death in the Afternoon’ is heavily inspired from the drama in the bullring.
Dining in Ronda
Some af the specialities in ronda are quite unique to the area. The most well know dish is the Morcilla rondera which is the towns famous black pudding. Blood sausage seasoned with many different spices. The local cheese is queso de Malaga, which is a goats cheese, cured and preserved in olive oil
When visiting Ronda be aware that in winter the weather is cooler than on the coast, and in summer it is generally slightly warmer than the coast
